The funicular is the mode of transport whose characteristics are closest to those of the railway industry, even if their specific features make it a separate rolling stock. The funiculars of Bourg Saint Maurice - Les Arcs Express or the Perce-Neige de Tignes were designed and manufactured by CFD, which developed these specific bogies, including those with independent wheels. A new version of this type of bogies was manufactured for POMA in 2019.
Design
Funicular bogies are characterised by the absence of a rigid axle between the wheels. Each wheel is independent. Depending on the type of track present on the site, the bogie can be equipped with inner flanged guide wheels only or with inner/outer flanged wheels on one side of the bogie and straight, wider wheels on the other side. The wheels therefore do not need to be tapered to ensure that the trainset is correctly positioned in the track. The gauge between the rails is also specific.
The welded H-shaped chassis is lowered to the maximum to leave as much space as possible for the passengers above. The body rests on 4 elastic studs located on the bogie frame, shock absorbers are located between these two elements to guarantee optimal comfort for the passengers. A specific braking system is installed on the bogie to stop the vehicle in case of problems with the towing cable.
