These locomotives were designed by CFD but manufactured by Fives-Lille. The transmission consists of a Ferodo coupler, a CFD Asynchro gearbox connected to the two reversing axles on each truck.
The axle carrying the reversing axle is connected by connecting rods to the second axle of the bogie. The SNCF chose this machine following comparative tests between the BB60001 and a diesel-electric machine with the same engine showing that the Asynchro gearbox allowed, with identical diesel, higher performances for 20% lower consumption.
